Bennett Burgida

Thanks for joining me in my effort to give back to Chai Lifeline.
Most of you know me and my story but for those that don’t here it is. My name is Bennett Burgida and I am the youngest of 3 boys. I live in Englewood, NJ and I have been an avid ice hockey player since I was 3 years old and a huge NJ Devils fan.

Towards the end of 2016 I started feeling pain in my stomach that didn’t go away. This went on for about a month. I visited several doctors with no relief and no real diagnosis. Until a sonogram revealed some sort of blockage in my small intestine – which was diagnosed as intussusception. I underwent surgery on February 1st 2017 to remove the blockage. We all expected an “all clear” after my recovery. Unfortunately, the pathology
came back indicating it was cancer.

I was officially diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma specifically, Burkitt lymphoma on February 17, 2017. I held off beginning my intense chemo regimen for a few days to allow
me to participate in my hockey tournament that weekend. My chemo schedule began February 21, 2017 and ran through to the end of May 2017. I was in the hospital receiving chemo treatments for 8 days every 3rd week with the most intense part being the 2nd and last day when the chemo was given directly into my spine through a spinal tap.
It was an extremely rough 3 months but in comparison to others that are fighting cancer I am grateful that my treatment was only for 3 months.

As of September 2017, I am officially cancer free!

Prior to, during and post my treatments, Chai Lifeline was there for me and my family. They made a difficult situation that much more bearable. It would mean so much to me if you would join me in my effort to give back to them while playing the sport I love.
Thanks for being part of the team and looking forward to seeing you on the ice.
